The release date was eventually changed from the Japanese premiere date of August 6, 2022, to a more obscure date, “soon.” Although the announcement does not provide an exact release date, it is the first official confirmation that there are at least plans to release the new movie outside of Japan.
One Piece: Red will be the fifteenth edition of the series. The production of the new film is supervised by series creator Ichiro Oda, who revealed in a statement that the film was born out of his desire to add a new female character to the series. “I’m tired of drawing legendary ancestors in movies!” I want to draw a new little female character! This is the character I want to do right now! “That’s how it all began,” Oda said. The new film is written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who previously wrote the screenplay for One Piece Film: Gold and the animated film Gantz, and will be directed by Goro Taniguchi of Code Geass.
The film will focus on the red-haired character Shanks, the captain of the Red Hair Pirates, and one of the Four Emperors of the New World. Shanks is the man who inspired the series’ hero, Monkey D. Luffy, to kill a pirate, and he also gave the little stretchy hero his straw hat. The trailer for the movie also reveals that the aforementioned new female character is a type of singer.
One Piece was first sold in 1998 in the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. Within 24 years, The Straw Hat Pirates has become the best-selling manga series in history, with nearly half a billion copies circulating worldwide. In 2021, the manga released the thousandth chapter and the hundredth volume. The anime adaptation, which was produced by Toei Animation and debuted in 1999, recently aired its 1000th episode. Both Oda and Shueisha hinted that the story would be over soon, but a One Piece sequel is already in the works, as Netflix and Tomorrow Pictures, Cowboy Company Bebop, production on a direct modification of the series.
